Judge approves $20M payment on behalf of Katrina damage
NEW ORLEANS — a federal judge has finally agreed towards the approval of $20 million settlement of class-action lawsuits in opposition to several Louisiana levee boards. The suits were filed on behalf of around 500,000 landlords whose belongings was damaged by the Hurricane Katrina’s flood waters.
Plaintiffs’ lawyer Joseph Bruno alleged that the court has appointed a”special master” who will come to a decision that how to give out proceeds from the settlements with the Orleans, East Jefferson along with the Bornge parishes.
Bruno says that he don’t know that how many owners will be benefited from the settlement. He also says an appeal might delay the process.
U.S. District Judge Stanwood Duval has given his final approval of the deal on Wednesday. The settlement doesn’t involve any individual claims in opposition to the Army Corps of Engineers over the damage from levee failures.
